h.o.m.e. annual report
As a graphic designer and illustrator, I was contracted by Chicago-based nonprofit Housing Opportunities & Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.) for the creation of their annual report for the 2020 fiscal year. I collaborated with H.O.M.E.’s Director of Development to turn their program and financial reporting into an engaging 8-page print, 11-page digital booklet to be distributed by mail and email to thousands of the organization’s stakeholders. Note: all copy featured in the report was provided by H.O.M.E.

Design
The goal of this report’s design was to showcase intergenerational community during a year of isolation. Due to safety measures taken to protect residents throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, there were few photos documenting the organization’s 2020 programs. Because of this, I chose a fully-illustrated, hand-drawn visual style for the design, referencing current residents and utilizing elements of one of H.O.M.E.’s resident buildings, the Pat Crowley House, to create a piece that felt personal and captured the sense of connection and togetherness that persisted in spite of difficult times.
Branding
Utilizing this report publication to roll out new branding standards for the organization, I built the interior pages of the report to feature H.O.M.E.’s traditional branding with a new twist. The aim was to maintain familiar brand elements for longtime supporters while introducing new visual elements to modernize and diversify. I introduced new accent colors and fonts, in addition to the illustrative design style.
To further support new but familiar imagery in this report, I utilized a key symbol of H.O.M.E.’s Pat Crowley House: its signature mosaic. Elements of the mosaic are employed throughout the report, in headings and picture frames.
A Word from H.O.M.E.
“I knew I was going to like working with Mackenzie on my organization's annual report, but I couldn't have anticipated how she would make me fall in love with the design process, let alone how beautiful the final product would turn out.
Mackenzie is a proficient project manager. At our initial consultation appointment, she made sure we left with a realistic timeline, brainstorm for the design concept, and understanding of each other's communication preferences. Within just a few days, she followed up with a thoughtfully put-together presentation deck which included multiple illustration styles, fonts, and color to choose from. She brought that same professionalism and detail orientation to every step of the way.
If you've been sitting on an awesome design idea, but aren't quite sure how to execute it, I would 100% recommend reaching out to Mackenzie. She created a product for us that aligned with our style and goals, but also pushed our brand forward. The document is full of bright colors and charming drawings done by hand, evoking the joy and togetherness we hope to inspire for the older people we serve. Most of all, I was really impressed by how she was able to take a short conversation and a couple reference photos and turn it into work of art that our staff and donors love.”
